Beneficiaries: Read On, Young Readers (ROYR) matches its adult volunteers with early-grade elementary school students in the Fairfax County Public School system’s Title I schools, where 40% or more of the student population receive free or reduced-cost meals. Volunteers read aloud to their students weekly, online or in-person. Reading to students builds on their general reading education; it increases literacy, vocabulary and social skills. ROYR’s mission is to help children develop a love of reading. Many students are English-language learners and/or are from disadvantaged backgrounds. The program is currently working with three elementary schools. The ROYR program has two major components. 1) Reading aloud to students online or in-person; and, 2) Giving new books to encourage more reading and the opportunity for students to start building their own home libraries.
Volunteer history: ROYR is an all-volunteer organization started during the pandemic to help children improve (or not backslide) in reading while the public schools were exclusively virtual. The organization is in its 3rd year. Volunteers include many former public school teachers, plus State Department, USAID, military and other federal government retirees who read aloud weekly to children virtually or in-person. All volunteers are vetted by FCPS and provided training. Vetting includes in-person fingerprinting at the FCPS Administration Center in Falls Church, VA.”
